The 4% rule
The 4% withdrawal rate originated from the Trinity Study (1998): a portfolio of 50–75% stocks historically survived 30-year retirement periods when spending no more than 4% of the starting balance per year. It's a useful rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
Retiring early (30–40 year horizon), or in a high-valuation environment, may require 3–3.5% for greater safety. A part-time income or flexible spending can bridge gaps.
